Coffee, Coast & Countryside: Five family walks that hit the mark

East Lothian has the perfect balance of wide beaches, peaceful woods and great coffee. It’s made for family days out – easy parking, gentle trails, and plenty of cafés that welcome muddy boots and big groups.

Every route below is either a loop or a there-and-back walk, so you’ll always return to your car (and your coffee). Whether you’re exploring the coast or countryside, these are our five favourite family walks around East Lothian – tried, tested, and always finished with something delicious.

1. Yellowcraig Loop – Start and Finish at Archerfield Walled Garden

  • Distance: ~7km
  • Start/Finish: Archerfield Walled Garden Car Park
  • Café Stop: Archerfield Walled Garden Café
  • Why We Like it: It’s a great mix of coast, woodland and beach – with views of Fidra and space for everyone to roam.

The Route

Follow the forest paths through Archerfield Estate towards the beach, you will emerge at Yellowcraig Beach and there is a path with the shore on your left and houses on your right. Follow this through the woods until you reach Yellowcraig’s Car Park. Head back towards Dirleton and turn right towards Archerfield to make your way back to the Walled Garden. The on-site café at Archerfield Walled Garden is a local favourite, offering coffee, cake, and relaxed outdoor seating – the perfect post-walk stop.

2. John Muir Country Park Loop – West Barns & Back

  • Distance: 5-7km
  • Start/Finish: Public car park opposite Dukes of West Barns
  • Café Stop: Dukes of West Barns
  • Why We Like it: It’s scenic views, family-friendly and Dukes has a great outdoor seating area – perfect for summer.

The Route

Start (and end) at Dukes of West Barns, an independent café serving excellent coffee, cakes and breakfast/lunch. From there, head along Sea Road and across Biel Water into John Muir Country Park. Turn right after the bridge and follow the sandy tracks along the coast (you’ll come to a car park). Go past the car park and follow the track left to walk alongside East Links Family Park. Turn right once you meet the water and complete the loop through the pines back to the car park. Retrace your steps back to Biel Water and where you started. The changing scenery through the beach, dunes, and saltmarsh keeps the walk interesting for kids and adults alike.

3. Whitekirk Hill – Short, Scenic & Sweet (Usually windy!)

  • Distance: 3km
  • Start/Finish: Whitekirk Hill Car Park
  • Café Stop: The Orangery at Whitekirk Hill
  • Why We Like it: Its got great views all across East Lothian, easy path to follow and a nice place to chill out after

The Route

From the car park, head towards the grassy bank to the left of Whitekirk Hill. You’ll meet a gentle path that runs through open countryside, offering lovely panoramas over East Lothian and the coast beyond. The gravel path bends round to the right until you take a right onto the grassy path which leads you back to the car park. It’s perfect for little legs or a breezy weekend stroll. The walk finishes at The Orangery – a bright, modern café-restaurant with excellent coffee and plenty of space for a stroller or high chair. There is a trail map at the entrance to the building just to make sure.

4. Yester Path – Picturesque Gifford and Woodland Trails

  • Distance: There and back so as long as you’d like
  • Start/Finish: Gifford Village (free on street parking)
  • Café Stop: Lantern Rouge Café
  • Why We Like it: Lovely village, good path and a little different from coastal walks

The Route

From the village centre, walk along The Avenue and then follow the signs to Park Road. Before the large gates to Yester Estate there turn left onto Yester Path which follows tracks and paths through the woodland in Yester Estate and then along the Gifford Water (3.5km). You can choose to continue on or head back for some amazing home baking at the Lantern Rouge.

5. Foxlake Loop – Nature, Fresh Air and Lakeside Views

  • Distance: ~3km loop
  • Start/Finish: Foxlake Adventures Car Park
  • Café Stop: Jaybird’s Larder
  • Why We Like it: It’s quiet, flat and very easy to navigate.

The Route

Park in the Foxlake carpark and head past the lake towards the woods. Meet the trail that swings round to the right and follow it through the woods. You will come to the sea at which point turn right and continue to follow the path. Before Hedderwick Burn follow the path round to the right. Continue straight and you’ll pass the Ocean Vertical building on your left. You’ll re-enter the woods through the disc golf course and back to the car park and a well deserved coffee. On a nice day its great to sit outside and watch the water sports.

Final Thoughts

From windy beaches to hidden castles and peaceful forests, East Lothian is full of family walks that tick every box: Easy parking, child-friendly routes and great cafés nearby

Whether you’re exploring Yellowcraig’s coastal dunes, the amazing John Muir Country Park, or the quiet woodland of Gifford, every one of these walks promises fresh air, good company and a well-earned coffee. Hope you enjoy as much as we do!
